CHESS QUEEN
Rowena's Occasional Newsletter |
May/June 2006 |
Welcome to the May/June "CHESS QUEEN" – also known as Rowena Cherry’s Occasional – Newsletter. I am told that I am a “pantser” which means that I write books by the seat of my pants. I drift around like Persephone in the meadow, smelling the flowers, watching the clouds, not getting on with things, until the dark hero –or villain— charges out of his wicked world and carries me away. No matter how hard I try to be organized, and efficient, my newsletter ends up as a mad, last minute scramble, too. Take this issue. I interviewed the mysterious, modest, and darkly gorgeous David Deslandes in December! At the time, I had no idea this would turn out to be all about Knights in armor, and without their armor…. Especially without it! I guess you might call this my FANTASY HERO Issue.

In this issue (not in the usual order, owing to the adult conversation in A RESTLESS KNIGHT exerpt): 1. Sundry News and Links 6. Interview with a Cover Model and |
So much has happened in the past couple of months that I hardly know where to begin! I drove from Michigan to San Antonio, Texas, to attend the EPIC conference; I was interviewed on Blasé Skip Radio; I blogged in earnest at Amazon; I put together my first ever business and marketing plan (a mighty effort); I started a new group blog www.aliendjinnromances.blogspot.com for authors whose heroes are not human; I was invited to join Linnea Sinclair’s panel for the workshop STARSHIPS &SORCERERS & SEXY HEROES, OH MY! Dates to remember: Wednesday May 17th Friday May 19th 8pm to midnight Rowena takes part as a Court member in the FAERY BALL Saturday May 20th Sunday May 28th 9pm ET I’ve no confirmed plans for June, but I post news on my page at Amazon. REVIEWS AND AWARDS (or not) ROMANTIC TIMES Awarded MATING NET a Four Star Review
MATING NET was awarded third place in the JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER contest
FORCED MATE (the electronic version) was a finalist in the EPPIE awards (FFP category) Romance (Science Fiction/Futuristic) FORCED MATE (the electronic version) is a finalist in The Readers and Book Buyers Best published Laurie Awards RADIO -- www.blaseskip.com To listen live to Rowena talking about MATING NET just click the author’s name in the playlist, or go to the page for the show they were on, and stream just that show or download for the MP3s. http://www.blaseskip.com/lb New reviews of FORCED MATE This was a very original, complex and highly creative futuristic read that I found to be immensely entertaining. Re Forced_Mate A fun read [that’s a tad X-rated]. More great reviews of FORCED MATE were posted at AMAZON: If you like romance and sci-fi action and adventure, this is the book for you. FORCED MATE takes a contemporary woman, highly trained in the defense arts, and pits her against the most powerful (and sexiest) man in all the universe. The passion is palpable and the plot is enthralling. Forced Mate is one of the best sci-fi romances I've read, and I'll most certainly be buying books from this author again. ~Jacquie Rogers, author of “Faery Special Romances” I'm truthfully not generally drawn to sci-fi reads but with that said Ms. Cherry is helping to change my mind about this sub-genre. This book was a complex read but thoroughly entertaining. This book is long and complex and I loved it. It is science fiction in the best "blasters and spaceships" tradition, with a theme of political intrigue running throughout. But wait! There's more! This is a very emotionally satisfying love story between a feminist woman and a man who has never considered the wishes and desires of another person at any time. The chess analogies and political manuevering add greatly to the tale. There are a few unresolved issues at the end, which I can only hope indicate that the author intends to write a sequel, and soon! Highly recommended, must read for fans of futuristic novels. Twenty or more reviews of FORCED MATE are posted at AMAZON. Reviews of MATING NET MATING NET Compact, but Very Complex....intrigue, tension and a surprising and tender ending. ~Aysel Arwen, author of A Pirate, A Secret And Rose MATING NET It's a racy, razor edge of a tale, which will leave you amazed at how she does so much with so few pages.

We colorized “Billy”, who was graciously supplied to us by Oksana at www.artmam.com and moved the models around before we launched the contest. Billy is the new #1. A lot of people identified him as one of the two. Many people went for 1 and 4, or 3 and 6. Wicked chuckle! I had such a time finding two hairy-chested guys… But truly, 3 and 6 are different gentlemen. One wears a bead necklace, the other does not. The correct answers were #4 and #7. They were both new images of Jimmy Thomas. My thanks to Jimmy for his kindness in participating.
I can’t stand it when no one wins, so I did a random draw of everyone who chose #4 or #7.

Astrologically speaking, David is a fire child. He is an Aries. Among his titles is Canada’s Hottest Hunk! He was born one April, in Hamilton, Ontario, and now lives in Toronto where he delights visitors with his special skills of horseback riding, juggling, and stage combat. Wow! Thank you so much, David Deslandes for granting this opportunity to interview you. RC: Were you always gorgeous? DD: Absolutely . . . NOT! No actually I was always the "runt" in the class throughout grade school and I kinda stayed buried in the books and was fairly shy and introverted. I started working out at the end of seventh grade and did so throughout high school. Even then I didn't become a jock or anything, still kept to myself somewhat, and didn't "see" myself differently until my early twenties.
RC: According to your official website http://www.angelfire.com/celeb/menofrom/davedhome.html you are quite the man of action. What are your favorite outdoor activities? DD: When I get time, I enjoy canoeing, hiking, bungee jumping, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, canoe races, polar bear swimming, and also indoor rock climbing . RC: Tell me about being dubbed Canada’s Hottest Hunk. How did that come about? DD: In 2002, I entered a contest run by a Canadian affiliate of NBC to find "Canada's Hottest Hunk" and I won! As a result, I was invited to appear on the Ricki Lake show representing Canada as "Canada's sexiest man". The title of the Ricki Lake segment was "Hottest Hunks from Around the World". That was fun.
RC: Cool! How did you get your start? The Hottest Hunk contest wasn’t your first, was it? DD: I entered a local newspaper contest in 1999 … for no particular reason, just because…. They were trying to find 10 Canadian men from the Toronto area to add to the competitors already coming to the Romantic Times convention to compete for the title of Mr. Romance. I happened to win a spot and went through to compete in the Mr. Romance Contest in 1999.
RC: So, the Romantic Times Convention of 1999 might be called the official beginning of your modeling career? DD: Certainly my first Mr. Romance contest is a highlight that really brought me out to see possibilities for myself. RC: What stands out in your memories of your first Romantic Times convention? DD: Memories . . . I would have to say that meeting Heather Graham and her family was great (she was real friendly to me) Lance, Rich. Also meeting Tina Wainscott, who's book's character I was portraying that year. She's actually very cool and I still keep in touch with her. There were a lot people who really friendly and who are involved in the industry, one thing about the first contest was that, that was the first time anyone had asked for an "autograph" which was the weirdest feeling.
RC: What is that white thing you’re holding? I couldn’t quite figure it out? DD: It’s a pirate shirt that I’ve just taken off. RC: What part of the Mr. Romance competition was the most fun? How would you describe a POSE DOWN? What is it like to compete when you are basically a shy, introverted guy? DD: The most fun . . . I would have to say just meeting people there at the convention. It is a little tough doing all the rehearsals for the stage show (as I recall) because its so organized and timed, you don't get a chance to just hang out much, so when you do that’s a nice a break. Posedown . . . well the organizers will set you up with someone [of the opposite sex] to pose with and you strike a number of different "romance cover style poses" hopefully to the judges’ approval. RC: I guess the judges did approve! You nearly won once or twice, and you’ve been invited back, haven’t you?. DD: In the Mr Romance contest of 2000, I was voted 1st runner up, and 2001 I was voted 2nd runner up. Then, I had an accident in 2002 (at work) that sidelined me for a bit, however in that time I found it difficult to get work as a model primarily because of location being up near Toronto, instead of New York, although I did do a book cover and some other minor things. I have been fairly busy with my daughter that was born on October the seventh, 2003.
RC: When you say you were hurt at work, was that at Medieval Times? DD: Yes the accident happened at Medieval Times during the show. I was in a joust with another knight. His lance did not break and glanced off my shield and through the slot of my helmet striking me just left of my left eye. Needless to say it was a little bloody and I am still in process of having procedures done to regain as much sight as possible. RC: Tell me what it is like at Medieval Times?
DD: Medieval Times is in Toronto. I really enjoy performing in the show, in front of a crowd. Meeting young kids after the show – seeing their amazement at the show – is great. I perform live nearly everyday, unless it’s our "dead" time at work, then it’s only 3 times a week. I don't really think about my shyness anymore, I just do it. RC: You’re not nervous? DD: I know the first time I set foot in front of the crowd at Medieval Times, I thought they were all looking at ME or might make fun of me, and I was so red that guys made fun of me backstage. Now I am probably one of the more extroverted people, who wouldn't care if someone said a thing. RC: You have posed for a couple of covers… DD: Yes, Southern Pride and Northern Honor. RC: Can you give me some insights into what happens during a cover shoot... how long it takes, what the poses feel like. DD:Those covers were a pretty easy shoot for me, I think it was like one or one-and-a-half hours.
RC: How much of your success do you attribute to your interest in weight training? DD: I would say that, had I never took up weight training as a kid, I wouldn't have the physique I have (not that it’s demi-god or anything) but I certainly like to think of myself as athletic looking. RC: Will you be at the Romantic Times conference in Daytona this spring? DD: I am thinking about it, though it is much more likely I would attend in 2007, due to personal circumstances. RC: Is there anything I have not asked that you would like to mention? DD: Sometimes I find it weird still the way people can react to you in a given set of circumstances (being at the convention, with my hair down, people asking for autographs etc etc) when, if they saw me on the street everyday . . . well I wear jeans, t-shirts, baseball cap, hair tied back (because that's how I am comfortable) . . . probably wouldn't even give a second look. RC: Hmmm. Thank you very much for a wonderful interview, David Deslandes.

Hope Harris from Middlesex in the UK writes about FORCED MATE: Hi. I would just like to say just how much I enjoyed this book. I've read it more than once and find myself picking it up and reading at random. It's very funny and clever. I've never understood chess, but it doesn't matter! Hope ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've been reading the wonderful Out, Damn Story! blog. And I've just checked out your blog. I saw the question:
I'm not sure I can answer that for a year's time, but the metaphorical duel and chess game between Tarrant-Arragon and Djinni is so vivid, and his change of heart so sweet it's really compelling. The way he takes her to meet his mother...although he always has an ulterior motive.... and the way he really comes to care about how she feels is wonderful. And I love Grievous who in many ways is the voice of sanity.. and the way Djinni gives Tarrant-Arragon a bloody nose and his reaction, (slag dab! I think it was and charging off to see Ka-Nych clutching his nose).. and his heroic restraint when he is actually, finally having sex with her... and J J's erection when he's fighting Tarrant-Arragon at the end...bit of a hostage to fortune? and Djinni trying to catch the bullet and.. :-) I think my lasting impression will be of Tarrant-Arragon's change of heart...especially when he realises, when he's actually got Djinni into bed, that's he's never made love before..ahhhhh. And he wants to stay true to her. After all his, um, amorous adventures that's a big thing, him being a god-emperor and everything... And at the end the change is complete because he so needs her to say she loves him. And that he'll need her to continue to say it. I think what I like most (apart from the fact he's sex on legs) is that he isn't suddenly transformed, he's still arrogant and chauvinistic but a tender, softer side is revealed, as much to him as to Djinni and the reader. I like that sense of surprise and wonder he has at it. And I like the difference between his reputation and the reality of his behaviour. Although I do like the supporting characters as well. I like the attention you've paid to them, that although, of course, Tarrant-Arragon and Djinni are definitely the main story the other characters and strands are also well developed so the whole world is full and interesting. Phew! I didn't intend this to be such a long email. Sorry! I'm off now to buy Mating Net and play at jigsaw ;-D Hope
